  1. Great post!

When we moved, I made sure to pack a bag for my dog and that all of his belongings ended up in my car and not the moving van. I didn’t want anything he was used to having go missing. Also, since we didn’t move far away, we were able to let him explore the place before we actually moved in.

  2. Thank you! I’ve never owned any pets, but that is a good point to set aside their belongings so they don’t get lost in the shuffle! Our pets need to be happy too. =) ~M.

  3. My fiance and I have recently decided to buy a house, so in a couple of months these tips will come in handy!! Thank you so much 🙂

  4. I’m so glad! I really hope these tips work out well for you. Good luck in your house hunt. ~M.

  5. Great tips! I’ve moved several times in the last 10 years, although never more than a 3 hour drive. These are all great tips, especially the starting early on the packing. I always do that and it cuts down on the stress significantly!

  6. I agree! I’ve actually tried packing for an out-of-state move just two days before and BY MYSELF… you can just imagine how badly that went. So, these tips were mostly telling myself what NOT to do ever again, namely don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Haha

  7. Love this post, thanks! Really helpful.

  8. I’m so glad you found it useful! Are you planning a move some time soon? ~M.

  9. Yes! We’re moving to another country and a new home altogether! I haven’t made a checklist yet and there’s so much things to do. We’re married 4 months now…:-) Your posts on home design are really inspiring!

  10. Thank you so much! Good luck with your move and congratulations on being a newlywed! Lots of life changes at one go, huh? xx

One thing to add to the 4. Label tip – write on the *sides* of the boxes. Especially if things are going into storage, boxes will be stacked on top of each other. I have moved five boxes off a stack to find that the one I wanted was the second box down in another stack.

  12. Wow! I didn’t know that writing on the side was NOT an option. I never label the flaps because boxes do stack and you’d never be able to read the contents that way. But good point, if others don’t label the sides out of habit. Thanks! ~M.

  13. Wow, what great timing! We are in the process of selling our house and getting ready to move (although we still haven’t found one to move into). I wish I saw this post in June-over half of our stuff was packed and stored in the garage before we listed. I can take advantage of these tips though. Thanks!

  14. Good luck with selling and moving! I hope you find these tips useful. ~M.

Love this read. I am always helping friends move, and I know they’ll appreciate this. 🙂

  16. Thank you for sharing this! I really appreciate it! ~M.

  17. Thank you for the like. Btw, just read the piece on moving houses. Loved the color-coding idea!

  18. Thank you! I thought of that idea all by myself! haha ~M.

  19. I’m sending the link to this post to two friends who are getting ready to move. Great advice– brilliant! (We moved 13 times the first 20 years we were married–including the USA, Spain and Costa Rica–so I’m with you!)

  20. Thank you! I hope they find my tips helpful! I’m done moving – are you?

  21. Thank you so much for the detailed list we are moving two hours to another state and this post is very helpful! Thanks for sharing!

  22. So glad you found it useful! Good luck with the move, although two hours is nothing! I once moved 14 hours – ugh! ~M.

  23. I love moving tips! You can always learn from others. I have moved so many times that I now actually keep a set of moving boxes. I just flatten them and keep them in the closet! What I do is number my boxes. On all sides AND the top, because they have often been in storage and it is true, it is easier when you can see without having to take everything out. I then keep a master list on computer of the contents of each box. I found that I would often start packing early which meant things weren’t necessarily coming from the same room. I also don’t like writing contents on the box for a few reasons. A) it ruins the box for next time because chances are something different will go in it. B) because my things were going in and out of storage by multitudes of movers and helpers, anonymous boxes are less likely to get stolen. My favorite boxes that I have scored from the grocery store are ones that carried bleach or detergent bottles. They are usually a perfect square so stack nicely and are very sturdy. Happy moving.

  24. I love your system! So true that packing is not always so clear cut and dry. I, too, tend to mix items from different rooms in one box based on the order that I pack them and what I can feasibly fit into one box. I hope I never have to move again, but if I do, I’ll be sure to keep your tip in mind. Thanks for sharing! ~M.

  25. After moving twice in the last 2 years (both times to far-away states) it helped me to keep in mind this quote: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
    ― William Morris

  26. I love that quote and try to live my life by it… but it’s a bit more challenging to get my husband on board. Haha
